    Event-related brain potentials in the study of inhibition: cognitive control, source localization and age-related modulations

    In the previous 15 years, a variety of experimental paradigms and methods have been employed to study inhibition. In the current review, we analyze studies that have used the high temporal resolution of the event-related potential (ERP) technique to identify the temporal course of inhibition to understand the various processes that contribute to inhibition. ERP studies with a focus on normal aging are specifically analyzed because they contribute to a deeper understanding of inhibition. Three time windows are proposed to organize the ERP data collected using inhibition paradigms: the 200 ms period following stimulus onset; the period between 200 and 400 ms after stimulus onset; and the period between 400 and 800 ms after stimulus onset. In the first 200 ms, ERP inhibition research has primarily focused on N1 and P1 as the ERP components associated with inhibition. The inhibitory processing in the second time window has been associated with the N2 and P3 ERP components. Finally, in the third time window, inhibition has primarily been associated with the N400 and N450 ERP components. Source localization studies are analyzed to examine the association between the inhibition processes that are indexed by the ERP components and their functional brain areas. Inhibition can be organized in a complex functional structure that is not constrained to a specific time point but, rather, extends its activity through different time windows. This review characterizes inhibition as a set of processes rather than a unitary process

    Envelhecimento cognitivo e funçÔes executivas: o papel particular da inibição

    One of the most widely studied hypotheses for cognitive ageing assumes that age-related effects can be explained by a less efficient operation of the executive functions and particularly inhibition. According to this hypothesis executive functions are more susceptible to ageing or are the first to be deteriorated with ageing. The present study examined the neuropsychological profile of young adults and older adults in order to understand whether there is a general deficit in executive functions or any changes in cognition (attention, memory and language abilities) that could contribute to a better understanding of the ageing process. Older adults (N=20; M=63.45, SD=6.21 years old) and young adults (N=20; M=18.95, SD=1.79 years old) participated in the present study. These age groups were matched by gender and estimated intelligence quotient. Participants were assessed with a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery (including attention, memory, language and executive function measures). Our results indicated that older adults, comparatively to young adults, present: (i) cognitive slowing; (ii) preserved retention and recognition abilities; (iii) preserved naming and comprehension abilities; (iv) preserved selective and divided attention (iv) preserved abstraction and planning; (v) inhibition deficits. Older adults have a greater number of inaccurate responses and require more time to respond accurately than younger adults. However, in some cases, they have a similar or even increased performance than young adults in the neuropsychology tests included in our battery (e.g., the Tower test). This suggest that even some executive functions can be resistant to ageing effects

    Cognitive control during a spatial Stroop task: comparing conflict monitoring and prediction of response-outcome theories

    Cognitive control allows information processing and behaviour to vary adaptively from moment to moment depending on current goals. Two of the most prominent theories that have been proposed to account for the processing of cognitive control are the Conflict Monitoring Theory (CMT) and the Prediction of Response-Outcome Theory (PRO). According to both theories, the implementation of cognitive control during a trial in a conflict task reflects processing events that occurred in the preceding trial. Both CMT and PRO advocate that the detection of conflict situations leads to the recruitment of cognitive control, but they differ regarding the processing underpinnings of cognitive control during conflict resolution. CMT proposes that conflict between alternative responses is resolved by enhancing the task’s relevant dimension, reducing interference from the task’s irrelevant dimension(s). This control setup promotes conflict adaptation in the subsequent trial. PRO proposes that conflict is resolved by means of a cost-effectiveness analysis that identifies and suppresses action plans linked to the less appropriate responses, facilitating conflict resolution in the subsequent trial. To adjudicate between these alternatives, we manipulated contingencies pertaining to two-trial sequences (n-1; n), namely, the congruency between task relevant/irrelevant dimensions in trial n-1 and response repetition in trial n. A spatial Stroop task was used, in which task-relevant and irrelevant information were integrated within the same stimulus. In this task, participants were required to attend to the direction of an arrow while ignoring its position. The arrow’s direction and position could be congruent (C) or incongruent (IC). In one experiment, trials in which the participant was required to respond according to the position of a circle (PO; position only trials), occupying the sequential position n, were the focus of the analyses. Three experiments were conducted manipulating the trials’ sequence structure. In Experiment 1, we studied a low control/low conflict condition (cC trials), and two high control/low conflict conditions (icC with and without response repetition). In Experiment 2, we studied two low control/no conflict conditions (cPO with and without response repetition) and two high control/no conflict conditions (icPO with and without response repetition). In Experiment 3, we studied a high control/high conflict condition (icIC) and two low control/high conflict conditions (cIC with and without response repetition). Overall, our findings are in agreement with previous studies in which both bottom-up processing, linked to response and stimulus position repetition, and top-down processing, linked to cognitive control, were shown to contribute to sequence effects in conflict tasks. Specifically, our observations mainly support PRO’s account of conflict resolution, in which the intervention of top-down processing is substantially more complex than in CMT’s account

    This paper proposes a financial evaluation of the investment in SMARTechs in wastewater companies. SMAR Techs are innovative technologies that enable companies to work toward the circular economy approach, thanks to allowing the development of by-products from wastewater. A simulation of the financial impact of the SMARTech introduction was conducted based on the Italian tariff system. It is performed assuming two different scenarios. These relate to a market’s presence (or absence) for the by-products resulting from the application of SMARTechs. The results show that investing in these technologies provides both financial and environmental benefits

    Steel sieves filter and stripping for the quality of extra virgin olive oil

    Filtration is a widely spread procedure adopted after the olive oil extraction process to remove the suspended solids and to eliminate humidity, making the oil more brilliant and more stable. In Tuscany, the most common filtration equipment are filter-presses. Those devices are able to reach the aims of filtration but they show some disadvantages. First of all, filter-presses consume not re-generable filter sheets. These represents a direct purchasing cost as well as an indirect cost due to the trapping of a relevant oil amount. Furthermore, the use of filter sheets implies complications for their disposal. To partially overcome these issues a new filtration equipment able to reduce the filter sheets consumption has been designed. The main idea is the addition of steel sieves before the filter-press capable to retain the suspended solids. In this way, the filter sheets only have to hold the humidity of oil. The addition of the sieves increases the amount of processed olive oil up to about five times before the filter sheets has to be substituted. In addition, the opportunity of performing the stripping techniques to remove the dissolved oxygen from the olive oil is provided. The dissolved oxygen is shortly consumed by the oil in a few days and seems to act as a starter for the subsequent autoxidation reactions. This was confirmed by the faster quality decay kinetics during shelf-life of the oils with higher dissolved oxygen concentration, according to previous researches. In the presented device, the adoption of the stripping technique was able to halve the dissolved oxygen concentration in the treated extra virgin olive oils. Thus, the innovative filter should be able to considerably reduce the filter sheets consumption, and to improve the olive oil shelf-life through the reduction of the dissolved oxygen amounts.     Feasibility and Acceptability of a Real-Time Telerehabilitation Intervention for Children and Young Adults with Acquired Brain Injury During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Experience Report

    This study examined the feasibility and acceptability of a telerehabilitation intervention during the COVID-19 pandemic in a sample of children and young adults with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). Thirteen patients and/or their families agreed to participate in the speech and neuropsychological telerehabilitation sessions. The treatment was synchronous, patient centered and aimed at improving specific abilities. Sessions were held twice a week over a 10-week period. Two questionnaires were completed both by parents and therapists to assess feasibility and acceptability. Neither technical issues nor clinical obstacles were found. The quality of the therapeutic relationship played a key role in the intervention. Synchronous telerehabilitation provided several advantages both for patients and therapists. Moreover, the patient centered intervention eased the burden of the caregivers at a time of high stress. The real-time telerehabilitation treatments were deemed suitable for children and young adults with ABI. Further studies are needed to support the use of telerehabilitation as an integral part of their standard care

    The organic residues of lining in transport vessels from the Red Sea coast of Eritrea: a further element to understand past commercial relations

    AbstractThe archaeological site of Adulis lays on the Red Sea Coast of Eritrea and during Late antiquity played a significant role in interregional commerce among the Mediterranean, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean coasts. Contacts with the Eastern Mediterranean, Arabian Peninsula and the Sasanian world have been attested from different classes of pottery that were brought to light from on-going excavations at the site. Transport vessels have attracted particular attention as they testify the extent of trades and exchange networks. Transport vessels were coated by organic materials to seal porosity and make them suitable to transport different liquids and/or food. The characterisation of coating materials helped shedding light on their function, and support the attribution to different classes of transport vessels found in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea worlds. Here, the characterisation of the organic lining detected on a set of samples identified as Late Roman Amphora 1 is discussed. Results from the chemical analyses, performed preliminarily by FT-IR and then by GC–MS, revealed that bitumen was used for lining the jars, thus leading to set the classification of the amphorae within the wide class of the so- called Torpedo jars. By overcoming the question of typological complexity posed from macroscopic examination of the sherds, the chemical investigation contributed here crucial information for the interpretation of past trading in the Indian Ocean. The research gave clues to broaden the distribution of the Torpedo jars to Adulis, giving an unexpected insight into the trading routes of the past
